MEDFORD, Ore. — Oregon has one of the highest rates of autism in the country and that’s why people from across the state are gathering to learn how to deal with those experiencing autism.

“Families for Community” along with county services are holding the first ever Southern Oregon Autism Summit, it’s the first of its kind in Oregon.

The goal of the 2-day conference is to train and equip people in our community, to meet the needs of families impacted by autism. This is a personal fight for the executive director of “Families for Community”, who has a son with autism.

“We have opportunities today for him, because people who came before me planted those seeds, so this is all part of saying, how can we plant those seeds, change our communities, so the next generation of people who experience autism within our community have a different place to live,” said Emilie Sampson, the Executive Director of Families for Community.

More than 200 people registered for today’s events. Those people include parents, members of government agencies and non-profits.
